A model for the analysis of the bandwidth along an optical transmission line is suggested and tested on the Post Office experimental link. It is found that optical equalization is a real effect that has been observed in practice and that the degree of equalization is affected by only two major factors. These are the degree of mode coupling in the route and the functional relationship between mode delay and mode number. Finally a procedure for the optimization of the bandwidth of a link is suggested and tested.
