A STUDY ON ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF PRIVATE GRAINAGES IN CHAMARAJNAGAR DISTRICT IN KARNATAKA

Silkworm seed is the backbone of sericulture industry and commercial grainages are the private bodies where disease free silkworm seeds (dfls) are produced to cater to the needs of farmers. Timely supply of high quality silkworm seeds in sufficient quantity is very important. At present in Karnataka, the private grainages contribute to the extent of 65-69 per cent of the total production of dfls and the rest by the government grainages. It is pertinent to note that the sustained growth of the seed production sectors depends on cost effectiveness, adoption of appropriate technologies and effective management practices. A study was undertaken to analyze the performance of private grainages in Chamarajnagar district of Karnataka. The investigation revealed better production performance by private grainages in Chamarajnagar district in relation with effective utilization of raw materials, installed production capacity manpower and capital invested. The cost of production and benefit cost ratio worked out for 100 dfls production of PM x C. Nichi dfls, and PM x Biv. dfls have indicated higher cost and return structure. Further, grainage owners/ officers possessed full knowledge of grainage technologies, with respect to adoption and they have also adopted almost all the cost effective technologies. Lack of demand and competition from the other grainages were the major problems faced in the private grainages in the study area.
