SPECIALIZED SILKWORM BREEDS (BOMBYX MORI L.) IN THE SILKWORM GERMPLASM STOCKS OF INDIA

The silkworm breeds with special characteristics were identified from the available silkworm germplasm stocks of India. Most of the accessions (56 in multivoltine & 84 in bivoltine) were found to be superior to the existing ruling breeds such as PureMysore and Nistari in multivoltine and NB4D2 and KA in bivoltine. In the case of multivoltine silkworm, the accession BMI-0034 has shown higher performance for 7 specialized characters followed by BMI-0009 & BME-0030 for 6 characters each; and BMI-0008,BMI-0036, BMI-0043, BMI-0055 and BMI-0058 for 5 characters each. Further, 12 multivoltine accessions were identified for high temperature tolerance (36 °C and 90 % RH). Similarly, for bivoltine silkworm, the accession BME-0187 has shown higher performance for 5 specialized characters followed by BBE-0182 & BBE-0262 for 4 characters and BBE-0202 & 0266 for 3 characters. These potential silkworm accessions are recommended for utilization in silkworm breeding programmes.
