Energy-Efficient Small Cupola for Indian Foundry Units: Results of an Applied Research Project

TERI has been providing technical assistance on design and operation of the divided blast cupola (DBC) to Indian foundries since 1998. However, the minimum size of DBCs designed by TERI till 2009 was of 21 inch internal diameter (ED). Due to the growing demand for cupolas of smaller size by foundry units located in Ahmedabad and other clusters in Gujarat, TERI undertook a research project to demonstrate a 18 inch (460 mm) ID DBC in Ahmedabad cluster. As proper maintenance of the inside refractory lining of small cupolas is difficult, an innovative mechanical arrangement for splitting the cupola shell was incorporated in the design. This paper highlights the background of the project, energy savings achieved and future prospects of the technology.
