The quality of castings of any metal such as steels, cast iron, S.G. Iron and all types of Non-Ferrous alloys depend upon basically on mechanical properties. These are controlled by parameters such as chemical composition which in turn control the microstructure of the casting. The mechanical properties are derived from the microstructure. The microstructure examination can also be used to identify the casting defects exactly, and the root cause can be interpreted correctly. Metallographic examination is a most important tool to control the quality of the castings. For correct analysis of microstructure, the basic skill of preparation of specimen is naturally valuable. This paper will give some practical tips for correct preparation of specimen.
