Keeping an eye on the activities of small foundries (C. I./Steel) in and around Howrah, barring the established modern foundries for Railways and Automobiles, one can easily conclude that, unless those foundries are mechanised/semi-mechanised or renovated with minimum sand mixer/plant with distribution system, many foundries will be closed. This is an impact of globalisation, which has put benchmark on product quality. In this paper, a few suggestions are made on the different aspects of C. I. foundry with Cupola as melting unit, moulding by hand, using loose pattern on floor, pouring by hand shanks, knocking out by hand and hammer, finishing by chisel and wire brush and finally grinding.
