Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease that is poised to double over the next 25 years in the USA and to more than double in developing countries (1). Although best known for its characteristic movement disorder, PD is now appreciated also to cause cognitive, psychiatric, autonomic and sensory disturbances. Indeed, despite James Parkinson's original claim that intellectual function was preserved in the "shaking palsy" (2), cognitive impairment is now recognized as a common feature of PD (3). Despite this growing understanding of the scope and impact of cognitive impairment and dementia on patients and their caregivers, our understanding of the mechanisms of disease(s) contributing to impaired cognition in patients with PD is limited. Here we have recruited a group of investigators with expertise in different areas but all focused on cognitive impairment in patients with PD. Our goal is to present a broad view of the current state of knowledge about the epidemiology, clinical and neuropsychological features, neuropathology, imaging, biom-arkers, and potential treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia in patients with PD.
