The Group has continued to develop in the last year with new research contracts in key areas. Three new EU studies are currently in the final stages of negotiation. Research in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is continuing to expand, with projects in the areas of traveller information, integrated urban traffic management, public transport operations and highway operations/driver behaviour. Links with the Vehicle Technology Group (VTG) at Southampton University under the direction of Professor John Turner are proving particularly fruitful. The joint development of a vehicle simulator is a strong support for the instrumented vehicle and microscopic simulation modelling research. Lisa Austin has moved from TRG to the VTG and has been replaced by Greg Marsden, who is taking over responsibility for the DIATS project. The MSc Course in Transportation Planning and Engineering continues to have EPSRC support and has ICE accreditation. In addition to organising this course, Dr Nick Hounsell has substantial new research in the area of public transport operations. Professor John Wootton's inaugural lecture on 'Replacing the Private Car', which relates to his new research initiatives, will be held on Thursday 14 May 1998. This will be an open lecture to which all are invited.
