An experiment was conducted in the bamboo areas of Aamwala in Dehra Dun and Giwain in Lansdowne Forest Divisions in Uttar Pradesh, India, to assess the impact of felling and cultural operations on the production of new culms in Dendrocalamus strictus. Three types of areas were selected at Giwain: (i) area where felling of culms was undertaken; (ii) area where felling was followed by soil working; and (iii) control, no felling. The Aamwala site consisted of two areas, i.e., areas where selection felling was undertaken in all the clumps and the control or no felling. It was observed that the production of new culms increased significantly at the sites where felling was undertaken. However, mulching with soil after felling did not produce better results at Giwain where overhead shade was more. The production of new culms decreased with the increase in clump size in all the cases. Felling and cultural operations at Aamwala site had a positive impact on the production of new culms that is the production of new culms increased from 18% in control to 31% at the site where cultural operations were carried out.
