Even today, some Berliners fluent in the city's dialect, Berlinerisch, recall the joke. The name of Poland's national airline LOT, it went, stood for 'Landet ooch Tempelhof' - 'Also lands at Tempelhof'. After all, the sight of hijacked LOT airliners on the tarmac at West Berlin's historic airport was, in the late 1970s and early '80s, quite a familiar one.
