Measurement of group-velocity dispersion using optical SSB modulation - novel method for determining the sign of dispersion and its application to dispersion monitor

We propose a novel method for optical fiber dispersion measurement using optical single sideband (SSB) modulation In the proposed method, we alternate me sideband of the probe light between upper and lower sidebands, and derive the dispersion value from the phase shift induced by the alternation of the sideband. Moreover, the sign of the dispersion can be measured only from the output light by setting the durations of the upper and lower sideband asymmetrically. In this paper, we first explain the principle of operation of the proposed method for the dispersion measurement using optical SSB modulation, and show the experimental demonstration.
