Since the antenna of a mobile phone is located in very close to the head, the attention to the biological effects of electromagnetic wave radiated from the antenna has been drawn. In this report, the design criteria for antenna structures with the reduced maximum local SAR while operating in the vicinity of the head have been investigated. First, the study is performed using a simple λ/2 dipole antenna combined with a linear or planar reflector. Next, the folded dipole antenna with a planar reflector, which has resolved the impedance matching problem, is proposed. It is demonstrated that the proposed antenna can reduce the maximum local SAR by 50 percent compared to a standard λ/2 dipole antenna. Finally, the results are validated by the experiment using the thermographic method.
