Renault's success with the ?5,000 Logan has spurred other OEMs to start similar low-cost car programmes, some promising even keener prices. But cutting costs while still improving emissions and safety in emerging markets will not be easy. Suppliers will be quick to capitalise. Bosch wants to be a leader in this segment and predicts vehicles under ?7,000 will take a 13 per cent share of global sales - 10 million units - by 2010. Half will be sold in China and India.
