CYCLOSPORIN AND ITS TREATMENT OF OPHTHALMIC DISEASES IN ANIMALS [Review]

The isolation, structure and proposed mechanism of action of the T-lymphocyte selective immunosuppressant agent cyclosporin (cyclosporine, cyclosporin(e) A) are reviewed. The development of cyclosporin as a topical agent for veterinary ophthalmic use is described, followed by its applications in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca, chronic superficial keratitis, nictitans plasmacytic conjunctivitis, eosinophilic keratitis and episcleritis/ scleritis. Possible roles in the treatment of other ''miscellaneous'' keratopathies and uveitis are also mentioned.
