It has been estimated that there is potentially 1 million square kilometres of suitable habitat for starlings in Western Australia and this could support a population of at least 12.5 million starlings. This many birds could consume in excess of 110,000 tonnes of food in a year, of which two-thirds would come from commercially valuable sources such as horticulture and grains. For the horticulture industry, this would represent a loss of 3% of the State's crop (grapes, apples, pears, etc.).
