In June, a major newsprint and wood-pulp manufacturer in Canada became the world's larges manager of forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) By achieving certification for 3.2 million ha of forest in the Lac-Saint Jean region of Quebec, Resolute Forest Products has increased the extent of certified forests it manages to more than 10 million ha - an area larger than Portugal. The announcement confirms the FSC as a mainstream environmental regulator. Million! of consumers recognise its logo, and, in the UK, DIY stores such as B&Q offer assurances that 100 per cent of its timber products are FSC-certified. And thaf s all been achieved in less than 20 years.
