A field experiment was conducted for three years during 1991 to 1993. to study the effect of difteret butler strips of cereals, oilseeds, legume crops and grasses in maize as main crop on runoff, soil loss and crop yield. Maize cultivated with bufferstrips of rice bean reduced runoff by 32.0%, 10% and 12%, and soil loss by 33.0%. 13% and 18% over control without buffer strip of vetiver and buffer strips of greengram and ground nut. The equivalent yield of maize with rice bean buffer strips was higher by 65, 31. 29 and 42% as compared to control (without buffer stripping), buffer strips of greengram. groundnut and vetiver, respectively. Considering the reduction in runoff, soil loss and increase in yield, net returns and B : C ratio, rice bean as buffer strip with maize is recommended as conservation measures for rainfed slopy uplands in red lateritic soils of north-western plateau agro-climatic zone of Orissa.
