The purpose of this experiment was to design a precalculus topic that would help prepare students for limits in differential calculus. We wanted the topic to enhance the interpretation of graphs and to be applicable in both technology based and traditional precalculus courses. Calculating images of intervals under continuous functions links precalculus with limits and helps students to transition from the static view of functions to the dynamic view of functions. Students observe the values off(x)asxtraverses an intervalI, diagram the movement off(x), and calculate the image interval. The students are calculating limits when they find the end points of these intervals.
