ROB: Two Sources

So-called reduced oxygen breathing is the new kid in the neighborhood for hy-poxia training. Where a traditional chamber ride simulates altitude by reduced pressure and typically concentrates on hypoxia-induced performance degradation, ROB is more subtle. By increasing the nitrogen content of air breathed at the surface through a medical-type mask—this is called "normobaric"—it brings on hypoxic symptoms slowly enough for the trainee to detect the first onset symptoms soon enough to descend and/or resort to supplemental oxygen. The training is intended to instill the idea that the decision is made at the first hint of hypoxia, long before performance has substantially suffered.
