Insect pest and disease management in winter season vegetables

Vegetable growing is becoming increasingly popular owing to their food value. Vegetables play a vital role in maintaining good health. An intake of about 280 g of vegetables/caput/day has been considered essential. Many winter (rabi) season vegetables being cash crops, their farming is important from a commercial point of view. It is important to sow certified, disease-free pure seeds, employ optimal crop rotation schemes, adopt best suitable or available technologies including balanced manures and fertilizers and timely and optimal irrigation to improve yields and quality of their produce. We are not able to cope up with the increased demand because production suffers a setback due to insect pest and disease occurrence. Major losses in yield can result when the infestation of crops is severe. Therefore, it is important that vegetable growers be well armed to fight menace of insect pests and diseases. They should also have thorough knowledge of the major insect pest and diseases and their control measures of economically important rabi vegetables.
