The major species of rats and mice inhabiting wheat crop fields in India are the lesser bandicoot rat, Bandicota bengalensis., the soft-furred field rat, Rattus meltada, the Indian bush rat, Golunda ellioti, the Indian gerbil, Tatera indica, the short-tailed mole rat, Nesokia indica, the house mouse, Mus musculus, the field mouse, M. booduga and the brown spiny mouse, M. platythrix. These rodent pest species can be managed successfully by various methods.
