GUJARAT is the leading hybrid seed producer of castor to meet the requirement of the whole India. Approximately 2 000 tonnes of certified seeds of hybrid castor worth Rs 50 million are required to be produced every year. Being a cross-pollinated crop,the production of quality hybrid seed is a difficult task, Large quantity of hybiid is rejected due to substandard genetic purity mainly because of improper maintenance and multiplication of parental lines of hybrid castor. Hence some important points on the parental seed multiplication is discussed herewith. Some castor hybrids with their parentage, average yield, potential yield and year of release have been presented in Table 1.
