Nutrition forestry and women — a model for sustainable use and protection of subsistence women

OVER 800 million people suffer from malnutrition despite substantial increase in food production in many countries According to the FAO figures, approximately 20 million people are dyeing of starvation each year. As a resoponse to what was coined as 'the world food crisis' in early seventies, the FAO launched in 1974 an 'International Undertaking on World Food Security'. The World Food Conference and the FAO had laid the basis for the theoretical and practical work with food security in the years tocome, notably food security as stable grain supplies at the national level. An increasing criticism towards this was officially acknowledged by member governments at the Eighth Session of the World Food Council in 1982 and at the 21st General Conferenceof the FAO in 1983; that the concept must expand to mean also food security at regional and local level, which includes the question of access to available resources and food supplies to the poorest segment of population.
