The rapid growth of weeds viz. Ipomoea aquatica, Ludivigia octovalvis, etc. reduces more than 50 percent water flow and increases the siltation of canals. Heavy sediments reduce the carrying capacity of canal and decrease the effective and expected life of irrigation system. It can be controlled by physical means, manipulation of water level, chemicals and bio-control. Among chemicals Paraquat + 2,4-DNa (4 + 1 kg ai/ha) showed highest reduction in swamp morning glory (87.6 percent), water hyacinth (88.8 percent) and salvinia (93 percent) when compared with 2,4 D amine + urea and Diuron.
