Garden pea (Pisum sativum), a very nutritious vegetable, is important for balanced diet. It is very rich in protein (7.2 g), carbohydrates (15.8 g), vitamin A (139 IU) and C (0.9 mg), calcium (20 g) and phosphorus (139 mg)/100 g green peas. The greenpod is edible and cooked with various vegetables. Green peas are processed (canned, frozen or dehydrated) for consumption in the off-season. Being a leguminous crop, it improves soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen in the soil. It also providespea-straw as nutritious fodder for cattle.
