Living green plants are used for phytormediation for reduction or removal of contaminants from contaminated soil, water, sediments, and air thereby avoiding excavation and disposal or chemical treatment of the contaminants. It involves plants capableof absorbing, degrading or denaturing metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, crude oil and its derivatives, and various other contaminants, from the substrates in which they grow and, flourish. Phytoremedia-tion is an energy efficient, aesthetically pleasing and economical method of remediating sites with low to moderate levels of contamination and can be used in conjunction with other more traditional remedial methods.
