INDIA happens to be the largest groundnut (Arachis hypogaea)-growing country in the world, with an area of about 8.5 million ha, Paradoxically, productivity of this crop is one of the lowest (855 kg/ ha) compared with either the World average (1 244 kg/ha) or the Asian average (1 417 kg/ha). The Republic of China with an area of 3.8 million ha under groundnut produces 10.3 million tonnes of nuts in shell, which is 37% of the total world groundnut production, whereas groundnut production in India hovers around 7.5 million tonnes despite it holds double the groundnut area than that of China. Recently India's contribution to the world groundnut production has decreased by 5% from the level of 30% in early nineties when it used to ranked first both in terms of area and production.
