Little millet (Panicum miliare) is one of the important small millet for the rainfed areas in Karnataka. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) showed that farmers, wanted varieties with higher grain and fodder yields and resistance to lodging. Five varieties were selected for testing on farmers, fields from those released at all-India level and state level. These were 'CO 2' (all-India release), 'PRC 3' (all-India release), VIM 20' (all-India release), 'Sukshema' (release for Karnataka) and 'TNAU 98' (promising entry in all-India co-ordinated trials). Trials were conducted at Jekinakatti village of Savanur taluk and Chandapur tanda of Ranebennur taluk during 2002; Harabagonda village of Byadagi taluk during 2003 in Haven district. In pre- and post harvest Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) revealed that the variety 'Sukshema' meets the criteria of farmers requirement. Farmers also opined that the new variety has better grain and fodder yield potential and lodging resistance and they would adopt them in future.
