摘要

The first polar bear I ever saw in Alaska didn't look the way a polar bear should. A healthy adult has curves and, beneath a thick coat of fur, a generous layer of blubber that provides insulation from the cold air and aids flotationin the water. In contrast, the bear I saw was shockingly skinny and had neither a thick fur coat nor, as best as I could tell, a great deal of blubber. The reason was not hard to discern. Polar bears are creatures of the ice and, on this day, except for a few floes dotted around, there was none. And there hadn't been any for some time: the ice edge had retreated far to the north, leaving the poor animal behind.
