Parachutes, inflatables and other allied systems are exposed to various environmental conditions in which they are subjected to heat, moisture, sunlight and other environmental factors. This causes degradation in the essential properties of the textile materials, which are constituents of parachutes, inflatables and other allied systems. This article summarizes the degradation studies done on a wide range of textile materials, namely, nylon, polyester, aramid, etc, with the emphasis on degradation during actual storage conditions, temperature, moisture, accelerated ageing using artificial light source and actual outdoor exposure at different locations across the world.
