A disintegrant mainly affects the rate of disintegration and hence the dissolution which is further enhanced in the presence of water soluble excipients. In the present work, an attempt has been made to prepare tablets of olanzapine (BCS Class II drug) by direct compression with different disintegrants, lubricants and to study the influence of disintegrants and lubricants on the dissolution rate of the drug. Physical parameters like weight variation, friability, hardness, content of active ingredient, disintegration time, wetting time and water absorption ratio were also studied. In vitro dissolution studies were carried out in 900mL of pH 6.8 phosphate buffer as dissolution medium. The tablets were compressed by direct compression with different super disintegrants and different lubricants. Most of the tablets complied with the pharmacopoeial standards. Among all super disintegrants, sodium starch glycolate showed a greater release in 6.8 phosphate buffer and the tablets which were formulated with PEG_(4000) showed a higher release than the tablets formulated with other lubricants. The dissolution of olanzapine followed first order kinetics.
