DIURETIC AND NEPHROPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF LEAVES OF NYCTANTHES ARBORTRISTIS LINN.

Kidney disorder has afflicted human kind since antiquity and can persist with serious medical consequences, throughout patient's lifetime. The present study was undertaken to significantly evaluate the petroleum ether, chloroform, alcohol and aqueous extracts of Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn, leaves for its diuretic and nephroprotective activity in albino rats that was compared with standard drug furosemide (100mg/kg p.o.) and gentamicin (40mg/kg i.p) respectively. The urine output and electrolyte concentration of sodium, potassium and chloride ion was investigated for diuretic activity and the urea and creatinine concentration in serum was investigated for nephroprotective activity. The alcoholic and aqueous leaves extracts of Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn, showed significant diuretic and nephroprotective activity.
