DIURETIC ACTIVITY OF DIFFERENT EXTRACTS OF LEAVES OF HYGROPHILA SPINOSA T. ANDERS (ACANTHACEAE)

Petroleum ether, chloroform, alcoholic and aqueous extracts of leaves of Hygrophila spinosa were screened for diuretic activity by Lipschitz test in rats. Chloroform, alcoholic and aqueous extracts significantly (p < 0.05) increased the volume of urine formation after 5 hours and 24 hours of administration as compared with the control group. The above three extracts also increased the excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride ions in the urine. The results revealed that H. spinosa is having diuretic activity which supports the traditional use of the plant.
