Future trends for the veterinary profession in Australia: An occasional article on the 75th anniversary of the Australian Veterinary Association

The existence of a profession can only be justified, from the community's perspective, by the benefit it provides to the community. There can be litde doubt that the profession's record in the provision of benefit to the community in the area of production animals has been spectacular (Gee 1994). The profession's role in small animals, as measured by the uptake of veterinary services by the community, would also suggest that the profession has met the community's expectation over the last thirty years, during a period when the number of Australian graduates have increased substantially.
