STATUS OF ANTHELMINTIC RESISTANCE IN GOATS MAINTAINED UNDER FIELD AND FARM CONDITIONS IN CHHATTiSGARH PLAIN

The control of parasitic helminths in domestic animals relies largely on the use of anthelmintic drugs (Taylor et al., 2002). However, reports of parasitic populations that have developed anthelmintic resistance have become increasingly common, and severely threatens the beneficial exploitations of this control strategy (Waller, 1997). Anthelmintic resistance is widespread in several states of India (Singh and Swarnkar, 2008). Being ubiquitous nature of the organisms and omnipresent in ruminants, management/control of worms presents a particularly difficult challenge following wide-spread emergence of anthelmintic resistance, further complicated by recent and radical changes in approach to worm management. Anthelmintics, though singularly blamed forthe failure of parasite control programme the world over, cannot be sidelined altogether. They have a definite role to play in sustainable parasite control programme but their frequency of use should be minimised to the extent possible and thus, the available resources of anthelmintics could be used judiciously (Sanyal, 1998). While, no emergence of ivermectin resistance could be observed in goats of ail the three agroclimatic zones, resistance against albendazole in Chhattisgarh Plain and against levamisole in Northern Hills region was detected in nematode parasites of goats (Sanyal et al., in press). Kumar et al. (2014) reported anthelmintic resistance against three classes of anthelmintics (albendazole, levamisole and ivermectin) in goats of Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh.
