To the Editor: I read with great interest the article by Varagic and colleagues, "Predominance of ATI blockade over mas-mediated angiotensin-(l-7) mechanisms in the regulation of blood pressure and renin-angiotensin system in mRen2. Lewis rats", dealing with the relationship between angiotenin receptor type 1 (ATI) blockade and angiotensin (Ang)-(l-7) in the regulation of blood pressure and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in hypertension.1 Their study results demonstrated that the ATI blocker, olmesar-tan, decreased blood pressure in mRen2. Lewis congenic hypertensive rats, which was concomitant with an increase in plasma renin concentration, plasma Ang I, Ang II, and Ang-(l-7).
