The pulse production in India has remained static at 13 ±2 million tonnes during the last 25 years resulting in lesser and lesser quantity available to people; pulse availability has nearly halved during the last 55 years; from 60.7 g/day/person in 1951 to 31.5 g/day/person in 2005 due to ever increasing population. Summer mungbean cultivation in rice-wheat cropping system in north India can increase pulse production by 4 to 5 million tonnes and largely help in alleviating pulse shortage in the country.
