Socio-economic and ecological aspects of farming in hills of Uttar Pradesh -- a case study

Over-exploitation of lands and inadequate conservation measures are posing major threats to the ecosystem of north-western Himalayas. Highly eroded stony soil is largely unfit for cultivation but for the lack of alternatives people continue to grow crops. By and large people in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh hills belong to economically weaker and deprived cat-egory. Women are the worst affected lot. Besides agricultural activities they are also burdened with household chores. Agricultural success in this zone will depend on making maximum use of locally available resources. Hence agricultural research and extension should provide a range of choice that farmers can choose from.
