JRC 698 (Shrabanti White) jute: a new high-yielding variety for white jute belt

A long standing requirement for replacing the varieties JRC 212 jute (1954) and JRC 7447 jute (1971) available traditionally and developed long back, is fulfilled by the release of JRC 698 jute var. Shrabanti White developed at Barrackpore in 1999. It is good for both rainfed and irrigated farming in white jute growing tract of north Bengal and Bihar. It gave 2.0-3.7 tonnes/ha fibre, if sown in mid-March, and could be harvested at 120 days allowing transplantation of paddy. It is taller than JRC 212jute and JRC 7447 jute commercial varieties, and flowers in 110 days.
