We propose the acquisition technique of 3D ultrasound (3D-US) using magneto-optic hybrid sensor for laparoscopic surgery. To acquire 3D-US in the laparoscopic surgery, we have to measure the tip of the ultrasound probe for the laparoscopic surgery flexibly moved in the abdominal cavity. Although a miniature magnetic sensor is attached to measure the tip of the probe, this sensor measures only five degrees of freedom. Therefore, the magnetic sensor is combined with an optical sensor attached to the ultrasound probe outside the body, and measurement of six degrees of freedom in the abdominal cavity is enabled. The accuracy of the proposed method is 1.08 mm of RMS errors.
