Women with toxic-shock syndrome almost invariably carry strains ofStaphylococcus aureusthat are positive for the toxic-shock marker protein, pyrogenic exotoxin C.Escherichia coliis frequently co-isolated with toxicogenic S.aureusfrom such women. In an earlier studv of 14 women with the syndrome, the present authors found that 64 per cent of them hadE. colias well as toxicogenic S.aureus.
