Objective: To investigate the anorectic effect of methanol extract of Benincasa hispida (MEBH) in Swiss albino mice. Methods: Mice fasted for 18 h with free access to water were administered with various doses of MEBH (0.2-1 g/kg, Lp.), immediately after which prewieghed food was placed and the food intake was measured every hour for a period of 7 h. In order to investigate the effect of gastric emptying on food intake, various doses of MEBH (0.2-1 g/kg, i.p.) were administered, immediately after which different set of mice had free access to prewieghed food at time interval of 1,2,3 and 4 h and at the end of 4 h all the mice were sacrificed and the wet weight of the stomach contents were weighed and percentage of gastric emptying was calculated for all the set of mice and also the food intake was also noted
