ANTIFERTILITY STUDIES ON THE ALCOHOLIC EXTRACT OF TUBERS OF GLORIOSA SUPERBA LINN IN FEMALE ALBINO RATS

Fertility control is essential for maintaining satisfactory standards of living. Herbal drugs have been used with considerable success to control fertilization. The plant Gloriosa superba Linn is used in traditional medicine as an abortifacient causing expulsion of foetus from womb. The study is a scientific evaluation of the alcoholic extract of the tuber of Gloriosa superba Linn in female albino rats. The in vitro evaluation was done in isolated rat uterus preparation. The drug showed significant anti-implantation effect. It prolonged the dioestrus phase of treated female rats. The drug has no uterotropic effect. It reduced uterine weight in the anti oestrgenic screening. The drug probably exerts anti-ovulatory action also. The drug also showed ovarian and uterine degenerative changes.
