Association of nematodes in edible mushrooms in Meghalaya.

A survey was undertaken to obtain information on the incidence of nematodes. Compost samples were collected from 15 farms of white button mushroom (Agaricus spp.) and 20 farms of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.) during 2004 to 2005. Three mycophagous nematode species, namely Aphelenchoides composticola, Aphelenchus avenae and Ditylenchus myceliophagus along with some saprophagous (Rhabditis sp.) and predatory (Seinura sp.) nematodes were found in compost samples of both the edible mushrooms. Observations of 15 compost sample of white button mushroom revealed that Aphelenchoides composticola was the predominant species with 80% frequency of occurrence and mean population density, 9.4 followed by Aphelenchus avenae and D. myceliophagus and Rhabditis sp. with 67, 13 and 13 frequency of occurrence, and 5.6, 1.5 and 10.5 mean population density, respectively. The saprophagous nematodes (Rhabditis sp.) were recorded as the predominant species with 100% frequency of occurrence and mean population density of 11 in 20 samples of oyster mushroom. Although the mycophagous nematodes were present, their mean population density as well as frequency of occurrence was very less.
