Iremember it well. Back in 1963, when this magazine's predecessor Animals began, I was growing up in East London. I could easily take my lead from Maurice Chevalier, and wax lyrical about those carefree days. Each spring, cuckoos called from the grounds of the local hospital, and every patch of waste ground was a mass of wall browns and other butterflies. When I went on bike rides down the local lanes, I used to find hordes of lizards.
