El Nino hits Asian sugar production

The 2004-05 season has been characterised by the first statistical raw sugar supply deficit in a number of years. The bulk of current sugar supply shortages can be attributed to dry weather in some of the world's major sugarcane growing countries. The fallout from a minor El Nino weather pattern in the Asian region has damaged cane in Thailand, India, Pakistan and China, while the relentless effects of global warming has intensified the drought in Cuba.
