"Earth provides enough to satisfy everybody's need, but not everybody's greed." (Radhakrishnan, 2002) The UN-based Brundtland Commission launched the term 'sustainable development1. 'Sustainable development is a development which meets the demands oftoday without destroying the possibilities for the future generations to satisfy their needs' Present day economics, while claiming to be ethically neutral, in fact propagates a philosophy of unlimited expansionism without any regard to the true and genuine needs of man which are limited. The three-decade long journey from Stockholm to Johannesburg began with the recognition of negative influences of human activities on environment, and was followed by a paradigm that sees environment and development inextricably linked. Unsustainable patterns of development result in environmental degradation, the severest impacts of negative environmental trends are felt by the poor, those most poorly equipped to deal with them and who often have the least responsibility for causing them.
