In the first century ad, the Chinese emperors of the Wei dynasty had an imperial rater who evaluated the performance of the official family. Little more was heard of performance management until the second half of the 20th century. Since then, we have seen merit rating, management by objectives, performance appraisal, performance-related pay and 360° appraisal become common in the workplace.
