The Cattle population in 2007 was 199.1 million whereas the buffalo population in the same year was 105.3 million. The annual cattle population growth rate was 1.83-1.84%. In 2010-11, milk production was 121.8 million tonnes as compared to 53.9 million tonnes in 1990-91. The per capita milk production was 269 gm per day in 2010-11 and the value of milk output was ? 2.62 lakh crore which is greater than that of major crops. 14.9 million workers were employed with NSS during 2009-10. Twelfth plan outlay for dairy development fixed at ? 6834.22 crore.
