Transgenic farm animals - a mobile pharmaceutical industry.

This article discusses the different gene transfer techniques utilized for the production of transgenic animals. The applications of transgenic animals in human health and livestock production are also presented. Some of these applications include production of recombinant therapeutic proteins, blood substitutes and antibodies, organ transplantation and as human disease models. Transgenic animals may also be utilized for the enhancement of carcass composition, growth, milk production, lactation, animal byproducts, disease resistance and reproductive performance of livestock. The limitations of transgenics are also presented.
